Features of ceiling spray guns

The reasons why experts recommend using a spray gun when applying paint to the ceiling:

1.     Automation of the process significantly improves labor productivity. The work that will be done with a roller or brush in a day will be done with a spray gun in 1-2 hours.

2.     When working with a spray gun, there is much less chance of smudges and stains, since the liquid is distributed evenly over the surface.

3.     There is no need for a brush, even when it comes to hard-to-reach areas, since you can use a spray gun to treat any shape of the surface.

4.     The device is accompanied by instructions from the manufacturer. Therefore, even if you have any questions, the answer to them can be found on the pages of this technical guide.

This method is not devoid of certain disadvantages:

1.     In comparison with a roller or brush, the cost of a spray gun is high. However, it is worth thinking about: if the surfaces that need to be painted are quite extensive, it is better to buy a spray gun, than a considerable amount of time and effort will be saved.

2.     Working with a spray gun is characterized by the release of paint particles into the environment, so it is necessary to provide measures to protect the eyes and respiratory organs.

Selection of equipment

The most common mistake when choosing a spray gun is buying a cheap device. Such devices are usually simply not adapted for high-quality application of paint and varnish materials.

When buying coloring equipment, it is recommended to pay attention to the following points:

1.     The optimal case material is aluminum alloy. The surface should be nickel-plated – this will increase the strength and eliminate the possibility of corrosion processes.

2.     The gun must not have any defects (irregularities, burrs, obvious injection defects).

3.     The handle of the device should be comfortably in your hand. The trigger handle must not have a backlash. The stroke of the handle should not be too tight, as otherwise the complexity of the operation will increase.

4.     The main attention should be paid to the outlet nozzle: the hole should have the correct shape, and the needle should move freely without touching the walls.

5.     All connections in the device (seals) must be sufficiently reliable: the principle of operation of the equipment is based on the injection of air.

6.     Location of the paint tank. Usually the tank is located at the top or bottom of the device. To paint the ceiling, it is more convenient to use a spray gun with a tank located on top. If the container is located at the bottom, the gun must be held strictly horizontally (to avoid air suction), and this is not possible when painting the ceiling surface.

According to the variant of air injection, spray guns are divided into three types:

1.     Manual type sprayers: Such equipment is outdated. In addition, it is physically difficult to pump air manually, especially when it comes to painting large areas.

2.     Pneumatic pumping: Pneumatics are the most used by the masters at the present time. The equipment contains a small electric compressor that directs the air flow to the gun.

3.     Electric air supply: For ceiling painting, this is the best, most advanced type of equipment. The spray gun spreads the paint very accentuated, resulting in no clouds of paint forming in the air. However, the cost of the device is quite high. For the operation of such a spray gun, you will need access to the power grid.

Self-production of a spray gun

The coloring machine can be built with your own hands, if you follow the simple instructions below. At the same time, there is no need to buy any expensive materials. The spray gun can be made from a piece of foam.

We cut out an element of a suitable shape from the foam. When choosing a form, we proceed from the size of the container for the paint. Usually, a jar or bottle with a wide neck is used as a vessel. The foam element must be tightly connected with its lower part to the neck.

We make a couple of holes in the foam. It is best to use an electric drill, as by making holes in other ways, it is very easy to damage the material. One of the holes is located at the top of the element. In this hole there will be a hollow rod (for example, you can use an empty container from under the rod for the handle).

The second hole is drilled on the side of the structure. You will need it to install the rod body in it. An ordinary bottle stopper can serve as a stop.

Painting the ceiling

Applying spray paint to the ceiling is much the same procedure as painting walls or any other surface. The whole process can be divided into two stages: preparation and direct painting of the ceiling.

Preparatory work

First of all, you need to prepare the paint and varnish composition for use. If we are talking about water-based paint, add the desired proportion of water, to dilute other types of paints, you will need an organic solvent.

We mix the composition with a construction mixer or a whisk for an electric drill. If the composition is not placed, it will be impossible to achieve high-quality painting. In addition, poorly mixed paint can cause clogging of the nozzle of the equipment, since even in a newly opened jar there are usually dry particles and clots of paint. Therefore, the paint and varnish material after mixing should acquire complete uniformity, there should be no foreign particles in it. To remove foreign inclusions, the already diluted paint should be filtered through a dense fabric that allows moisture to pass through.

Please note! Water-based solutions are non-toxic and do not corrode the skin. Such paints can be stirred even with your hands.

The next step is to add the desired color. Tinting is done in small doses, while constantly stirring the composition. During cooking, we make sure that there are no stains in the mixture.

Please note! Liquid paint always looks brighter, has a deeper tone than already dried or completely dried.

When painting with a spray gun, the use of personal protective equipment (glasses, a respirator or a gauze bandage) is mandatory, since there will be a lot of sprayed paint particles in the air. It is also recommended to remove all household items from the room: furniture, electrical appliances, etc. Large-sized heavy objects that are difficult to remove from the room should be covered with plastic wrap. Moreover, it is desirable to fix the film with something (for example, with masking tape) in order to avoid its sliding.

All moving objects and furniture sets are best removed from the room before the end of the work. Cover all stationary ones with plastic wrap. Adjacent planes, the ingress of paint on which is undesirable, should also be covered, fixing the polyethylene with masking tape or other available method.

Painting the ceiling

Painting with a spray gun, as a rule, allows you to get a better result than in the case of a roller or brush. However, the quality will be ensured only with a uniform and fine distribution of the paint material. Precautions must be taken: for example, before you release the jet, you need to move the nozzle of the device to the side, because the initial pressure pushes out too much of the coloring composition.

When the jet becomes uniform, we begin to apply the solution to the ceiling. At the same time, hold the spray gun perpendicular to the surface at a distance of 25-50 centimeters. The most suitable ceiling processing speed is 5-6 seconds per running meter.

For convenience, it is recommended to mentally divide the surface into squares, each of which will be approximately equal to the length of the hand. Next, these squares are filled in one by one. First, we perform transverse, and then longitudinal movements.

When applying paint from a spray gun, it is extremely undesirable to stay too long in any place, since in this case the paint layer will be too thick, which will lead to streaks. In addition, excessive enthusiasm for painting individual areas will cause noticeable unevenness of the coating. All movements of the sprayer should be smooth, performed at approximately the same pace.

The optimal number of paint layers is three. Moreover, each subsequent layer can be applied only after the previous one has completely dried. If you apply a layer of paint and varnish material on a still non-dry surface, you can not avoid peeling due to insufficient adhesion. In this case, the work will have to start again.

The first and last layer is best applied in the morning and evening, respectively, since at this time of day the room is well lit, and the sun's rays do not distort the perception of color. You can also paint in intense daylight, but in this case, you can not notice the paint defect in time.

Typical errors

Possible situations:

1.     If there are drops of paint on the surface, the painting technology was broken – the spray gun moved too slowly. Excess paint is removed with a sponge.

2.     If the layer is too thick, and there are detachments, apply putty to the problem areas. Next, we skin and ground the surface. We complete the correction of defects by applying two more layers of paint.

3.     If there are obvious bumps on the coating, this is a consequence of dirty paintwork, that is, the preparatory measures were not carried out properly. To remove the defect, you will need to apply plaster to the problem areas with sandpaper. Medium - or fine-grained paper will do.Competent work with the spray gun allows you to achieve coloring results that are not inferior to the work of professional painters. The main thing in this case is accuracy and strict adherence to simple instructions.
